Conservation by Re-use
Helping churches acquire surplus and/or redundant bells to be hung for
English-style full-circle bell-ringing.
Milton, Oxfordshire, St Blaise
The project at St Blaise was to replace the ring of six bells with a newly cast ring of eight bells hung in a new frame. The poor-toned 2nd bell of the existing ring being retained and put on display in the church.
The remaining five bells were sold to the Trust for reuse elsewhere. They have been slightly re-tuned to create the back five of a ring of six at the church of St Michael & All Angels, Hackthorn, Lincolnshire.
The photographs below are reproduced by courtesy of Kate and David Crennell. Link to Chilton, Oxfordshire web site.
They show the “old” six bells on removal from the tower on Tuesday 5th March 2002 and loading of five of the ring onto a lorry for transportation to Hackthorn. The Trust donated the ex-Milton tenor bell to the Hackthorn bells project.
Milton’s new ring of eight bells has now been installed. Interestingly they were cast to Gillett & Johnston profiles by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry.
